El Rocoto

Best Authentic Peruvian Food, August 2012

Peru’s cuisine has joined the mainstream, but it’s hard to tell what’s a classic dish and what’s a trendy spin-off without knowing the original. At El Rocoto, Inca-worthy recipes use traditional tubers, Andean grains, and the fragrant lúcuma fruit, while standards including ceviche, lomo saltado, and papas huancaina are artfully executed. Run by a Chinese Peruvian expat, the strip mall storefront also offers a chifa menu, featuring Andean-Cantonese treasures such as sopa wantan especial, or wonton soup. The only staples missing are guinea pig and llama—we’re OK with that, for now. » 1356 W. Artesia Blvd., Gardena. Also at 11433 South St., Cerritos
