The Judson Studios
Best of LA, August 2010
Stained Glass Design and Repair Several local stained glass artisans are following a tradition and many of the same techniques that predate the Middle Ages. At 113 years old, The Judson Studios in Highland Park is still cutting glass by hand and assembling the pieces like a jigsaw puzzle into scenes and patterns connected by soldered rods of lead. Fifth- generation owner David Judson says his goal is to preserve rather than replace windows, so about 30 percent of his business is restoration work. A homeowner’s cracked pane may first get the epoxy glue treatment, or a new match can be made from an inventory of 600 colors. The firm has also performed upkeep on some of its original landmark designs at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock and Ennis houses and at the Natural History Museum.
