Best Picnic Spot, August 2013
A good picnic must have certain basics: a wicker basket, cute edibles in mason jars, and booze disguised as an innocuous libation. A superior picnic demands more. You should be able to reserve a space because nobody wants to show up at 7 a.m. to stake a claim. There should be lots of tables, for those not inclined to sprawl on the grass, as well as shade, to help keep those deviled eggs from spoiling. Lacy Park in San Marino has all this in spades, plus a white-trellised rose patch worthy of Better Homes and Gardens. Although the complicated fee schedule for booking a spot may be off-putting, it guarantees plenty of unoccupied lawn for setting up your croquet course.
