Catalini’s Salerno Beach Restaurant

Best of Tin Pan Alley, August 2008

Live music from the late 19th and early 20th centuries is an elusive animal in a city of rock and roll. Yet Gershwin romantics can still swoon tableside to renditions of their old favorites at Catalini’s Salerno Beach Restaurant on Sunday evenings. For six years Grammy-winning ukulele player and music historian Ian Whitcomb has entertained shaggy hipsters, blond bikers, and blue-haired swingers tucking into fettuccine and meatballs. The concert unfolds beneath a mural of the Bay of Naples as Chianti toasts are made to “Give My Regards to Broadway.” Whitcomb is backed by the Bungalow Boys, who play resonator guitar and upright bass.
