Trains at: 25th Street courts in Hermosa Beach. The road taken: Fuerbringer and partner Nick Lucena battled jet lag as they competed in tournaments in Asia, Europe, and South America in an attempt to earn enough points to be the second U.S. beach team (behind defending gold medalists Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser). At press time Fuerbringer and Lucena were neck and neck with fellow Angelenos Sean Rosenthal and Jake Gibb for the spot. Psych factor: “It’s always ‘next ball.’ Whatever happened on the last point—whether it was a good play or a bad play—forget it for ‘next ball.’Superstition: “We start our tournaments on Thursdays. I always shave the Tuesday before. Never on Wednesday and never on game day.” What you should know: “Watch the battle of the big men at the net.” Life after London: “My partner and I decided that whether we make it to London or not, we’re going to play in as many tournaments as we can this summer and take advantage of the great form we’re in.”
