Classic L.A. to Z: V is for VIN SCULLY

It’s been too long since our home team deserved him. We wouldn’t have blamed the enduring voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers if he had chosen to abandon the microphone. Yet Vin Scully has stayed, weathering steroid-soaked lineups, boneheaded trades, and the rapacity of the McCourts—for our sake more than his. The same burnished baritone that called the strikes of Sandy Koufax and the swings of Kirk Gibson has had much shabbier material to work with lately, but he still conveys a sense of dignity to what is happening on the field. The power of that voice reassures us that our team will again achieve glory—if Vin and we can be patient for just a little longer.
