The House That Sam Built
December 1, 2011 @ 12:00 AM - January 1, 2012 @ 12:00 AM
When Sam Maloof died in 2009, the 93-year-old master woodworker left a legacy of spartan but sensuously curved furnishings (chairs, tables, music stands) that were a response to a not-so-brave world of plastic and stamped metal. Maloof lived in Alta Loma, cultivating a circle of painters, ceramists, and sculptors who formed Pomona Valley’s Arts and Crafts scene after World War II. The Huntington has culled 35 pieces of Maloof’s work, along with 81 examples of his colleagues’ for this comprehensive exhibition in the MaryLou and George Boone Gallery. More information.
