With Spalding Gray gone, no other storyteller in America is as gently discomforting as David Sedaris. There’s definitely an advantage to hearing him tell his jaw-dropping yarns of family dysfunction and job catastrophes in person: Sedaris’s matter-of-fact delivery utterly convinces you of the capriciousness of daily life and the bizarre unkindness of strangers. If you’re lucky enough to hold tickets to this UCLA Live event, resist the urge to read any recently published Sedaris pieces—you’ll want to hear them for the first time direct from the deadpan source.
