Santa Monica’s Latest Transportation Option: Zipcar

Every transportation option (sans jetpack) is now available in the beach town

Those lucky Santa Monicans. It’s not enough that they have the beach at their feet, a bike share and, soon, three light rail stations with direct access to USC and DTLA. Now, we learn Zipcars—basically short-term car rentals—are on their way.

Santa Monica has been discussing Zipcar for years, hoping to encourage residents to go car-free or car-light by utilizing the service when they need some wheels. According to Zipcar’s website, there are pick-up and drop-off locations near Wilshire and Lincoln, Olympic and Ocean Avenue, and at the Colorado Center office park. For price considerations, a Nissan Versa Hatchback goes for $9.50 an hour or $78 a day.

Zipcar is also hoping to entice drivers with new features exclusive to Southern California (for now). Renters can change their destinations or extend their reservations in the middle of their voyage, which was previously prohibited. But the biggest change is that Zipcars can now be rented for one-way trips. Whereas once, drivers would have to return the cars from the pick-up location, they can now drop them off at any of the 175 L.A. area locations. Zip-zip-hooray!
