Where to Eat Like an American This Memorial Day Weekend

Salute the troops with your stomach

This holiday weekend, as tradition goes, many of us will take time to salute those proud patriots who have served our country (while also firing up the grill and cracking open a few beers).

If you don’t feel like BBQ-ing, we’ve lined up four restaurants and bars paying homage to the U.S.A. through awesome, summer-friendly food.

AYCE Pancake + Fried Chicken at A-Frame
Remember what Mitch Hedberg once said about pancakes? Well, Roy Choi is putting his own spin on the pancake brunch at A-Frame in Culver City (housed in a former IHOP, no less), where for $14 you’ll enjoy unlimited silver dollar short stacks of buttermilk, chocolate chip, fresh strawberry with whipped cream, blueberry with orange zest, and mango with condensed milk pancakes, plus unlimited fried chicken drumsticks. You can also tack on bottomless Bloody Marys, Mimosas and Micheladas for an additional cost. Starting this weekend, A-Frame’s AYCE Pancake deal will run every Sunday and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m and Monday nights from 5 to 11 p.m.

Tommy Lasorda Burger at Plan Check
Ernesto Uchimura puts out special burger releases as often as Drake puts out radio singles. Hot on the heels of his Banh Mi Burger, the Plan Check chef is debuting his “Tommy Lasorda Burger” ($15) just in time for Memorial Day weekend. Stacked onto a crunch bun, this Dodger tribute is made with bacon spread, lettuce, tomato, onion, dashi-spiked American cheese, and, oh yeah, a split-and-grilled hot dog (available at both the Sawtelle and Fairfax locations). You’ll also find discount flights of Golden Road Brewery beers (five for $5; eight for $8) available throughout the weekend.

AYCE Crawfish Boil at The Brig
Head down to Venice bar The Brig on Sunday, May 25 for a parking lot crawfish boil featuring 500 lbs. of seasoned crawfish, Andouille sausage, corn, and boiled potatoes. And yes, it will be dumped directly onto the table (may we suggest a bib?). There will also be all-you-can-drink Budweiser, Sailor Jerry Rum cocktails, and copious games of cornhole. Pre-sale tickets are available for $35 per person.

Funke’s Famous Burger at Bucato
Chef Evan Funke’s Culver City restaurant takes its Italian cooking very seriously. But on Monday, May 26, Bucato is going full-on ‘Murcia. The only items on the menu that day will be the juicy, onion-topped burger Funke popularized during his time at Rustic Canyon—with optional bacon or fried egg—along with french fries and Budweiser on draft. Twenty percent of the day’s proceeds will go toward the Wounded Warrior Project. Reservations are suggested; noon to 8 p.m.
