Look at that burrito.
That’s not the shy burrito who uses his wits and overcomes a minor character flaw at the end of Act 2 to get the girl burrito. That’s the burrito that roars into town on a motorcycle that’s also somehow a machine gun and forces every burrito he crosses to reckon with how far they’re willing to go for justice. That’s the Trejo’s Tacos breakfast burrito.
Danny Trejo dropped his new breakfast burrito on menus today, and if you’re a fan of his food–and many are–this is welcome news, because our insatiable hunger for delicious breakfast burritos knows no rational bounds.
Here’s what we’re dealing with:
- a choice of slow-cooked shredded beef, housemade tofu chorizo, or Jidori chicken chorizo
- two fried eggs
- home-fried potatoes
- a blend of Mexican cheeses
- slices of avocado
- cotija cheese
- chiliquiles with Trejo’s fire roasted salsa
“The entire menu, and particularly the new breakfast burrito, is my vision, and it’s the best,” Trejo said in one of the greatest sentences to appear in a food press release in forever.
Since launching two fast-casual taco joints, plus a truck, Trejo has proved that it’s possible for a Hollywood actor to open a restaurant that doesn’t make you want to hurl your plate at the Hollywood sign in disgust. There’s something enjoyable about the disparity between the gritty actor’s villainous screen persona and his brand of locally-sourced, made-to-order, vegan-friendly fare served in a spotless, lovely setting.
The breakfast burrito is available all day at Trejo’s Cantina on Cahuenga during regular business hours (11 a.m.-11 p.m.) and from 7-11 a.m. at Trejo’s Tacos on La Brea.
