Let’s just put the cronut behind us for a moment. We don’t need the French to march in and give us a fried croissant hybrid: the American donut is perfect as is. Today, for National Doughnut Day, treat yo’ self to some of the city’s finest.
Randy’s Donuts: Part of Randy’s appeal, we have to admit, is the iconic architecture. Who doesn’t want to eat a donut under a massive donut-shaped sign? The apple fritters are especially popular. This morning, snag a free donut until 11 a.m. courtesy of Singapore Airlines. 805 W Manchester Blvd., Inglewood, (310) 645-4707
Krispy Kreme: It’s hard to beat Krispy Kreme’s donut. The classic glazed is almost all air, with a crisp exterior and interior that, when hot and fresh, seems to melt right on your tongue. Every year on this day the famous chain hands out free donuts. We’ll meet you in that line. 4034 Crenshaw Blvd., Los Angeles (323) 291-4133
ICDC: The popularity of pastry chef Mariah Swan’s donuts, served weekly at Neil Fraser’s BLD, has only increased. This summer, Fraser and Swan open ICDC (Ice Cream, Doughnuts and Coffee). Tonight, the pair test out their creations, including a cereal milk glazed and beer caramel with pretzel crunch. Taste the full line for $15, starting this evening at 6:30 p.m. 7450 Beverly Blvd., L.A. (323) 930-9744
Sticky Finger’s Doughnuts: The newest ‘nut to hit the scene is Sticky Fingers, a gourmet sort of underground pop-up. Today at 11 a.m., find them at Delibar on Fairfax where they’ll be serving up a sampling of flavors like salted caramel glazed and tiramisu. 339 N. Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles (323) 951-0039
Plan Check: Though these are not technically donuts, Plan Check’s crullers are worth a mention. Eggy and moist, with a cinnamon sugar crust that melts in your mouth, and whipped cream on the side, they’re most certainly worth a taste. 1800 Sawtelle Blvd., Los Angeles (310) 288-6500
