Trader Joe’s, aka everyone’s favorite purveyor of store-brand groceries, is always releasing new products, but today the Monrovia-based chain launched something extra special: its very first podcast. Inside Trader Joe’s kicked off with a five-part series that takes listeners behind the scenes at the company. Each episode is roughly 15 to 20 minutes long and features interviews with customers and “crew members” including the company’s CEO, its president, and even Joe himself. (Yes, he’s a real guy.)
Why a podcast? Trader Joe’s spokesperson Kenya Friend-Daniel says communicating with customers is important to the company (and sometimes the Fearless Flyer just won’t cut it). “Inside Trader Joe’s is an extension of that communication and allows us to delve even deeper into what we do, how we started, our plans for the future, and of course answer the questions our customers have asked of us, in our own fun and interesting way.”
Tara Miller, Trader Joe’s marketing director, and Matt Sloan, vice president of product marketing, co-host the new series. In the first episode, they promise, “This isn’t going to be a commercial, it’s not a long ad.” The podcast might make you want to shop at Trader Joe’s or even apply for a job there, but it also offers an honest look at some of the store’s biggest failures. Chunk pilchard in a can, anyone?
They even address what everyone hates most about Trader Joe’s: the parking lot. If you want to know why it’s so hard to find a spot at every Trader Joe’s store, skip right to episode five (or, hell, read the transcript here). That’s the final episode, for now. Friend-Daniel says, “We have many more stories to tell, and also want to make sure we are covering topics of importance to our customers right now, so we’ll be working on it.”
