Crustacean claims to have invented the signature drink of Beverly Hills—a la the Manhattan for New York. Debuting tomorrow at an official launch party is “The Beverly,” created by Crustacean mixologist Mark Rocha.
From the release:
“Rocha gained inspiration for the drink from Mary Pickford, a Hollywood icon and silver screen legend. Pickford’s cocktail of choice during her lavish parties at the Fairbanks Beverly Hills estate was a concoction of rum with pineapple juice and grenadine. While coming up with a fresh, updated version of the Mary Pickford cocktail, Rocha felt it was important to keep the stand-out flavor of pomegranate in the grenadine without the syrupy sweetness that accompanies it. He also wanted to add depths of flavor with over-tones of peach and orange that would lend sweetness to the drink without weighing it down. After a couple of trials and errors, Rocha came up with ‘The Beverly,’ a vibrant concoction of fresh pomegranate juice mingled with fresh tangerine slices, peach-infused vodka and Cointreau orange liqueur.”
Pomegranate juice and fruity vodka is certainly the drink du jour for some, though I seem to remember Rachel Ray making something similar for a TV Christmas Party a couple years back. And why is it that the drinks with which we’re associated are so darn fruity? We’re still shaking off the Apple Martini, now this?
The Manhattan is whisky, sweet vermouth, bitters, and a cherry. Now THAT’S a drink.
Either way, it’s more than just Crustacean taking orders for the libation. A number of other Beverly Hills haunts (TBA tomorrow) will be pouring it too.
