Thanksgiving Cheats: Where to Pre-Order the Best Gourmet Pies and Sides

Making all—or even part—of a Thanksgiving meal is so rewarding, but it can also be a daunting task for even the most seasoned home cook. Luckily, there are plenty of great L.A. restaurants offering all the fixings to help supplement your meal—with gourmet flair. If you’re devious, (and we are) you can even try to pass the deliciousness off as your own.

Here’s a list of where to get the sides, pies and birds that’ll delight and impress your friends and family this Thanksgiving. Most can be ordered through the end of the week, but be sure to check their websites for deadlines.

La Brea Bakery: We give thanks for Nancy Silverton’s recipes everyday, so indulging in one of her pies on Thanksgiving seems fitting. You can pre-order La Brea Bakery’s Spiced Yam and Pumpkin Pie (it’s topped with maple shortbread cookies) and pecan tart, and amp up your stuffing with their special Holiday Stuffing Loaf, which is available for purchase in the café. 468 South La Brea Avenue; Orders can be placed at 323-939-6813

Whoa Nelly: Wine pairings from DomaineLA and flower arrangements by Twig & Twine are both part of Whoa Nelly’s Thanksgiving menu—you can go all out or order items a la carte. All the ingredients for the food, from cheese plates and sourdough stuffing to herb-brined turkey and sweet potato pie, are sourced from farmers’ market and local producers. Orders can be placed online. Delivery is available or pick up at Whoa Nelly’s kitchen in Burbank.

SQIRL: We think the Cranberry & Bourbon Compote is reason enough to trust this Echo Park eatery with our Thanksgiving table. Your vegetarian guests will appreciate meat-free dishes, like sage and celery stuffing, Brussels sprouts with brown butter, and creamed chard. Cooks County: An editor here at Los Angeles confessed that she’s sold Cooks County’s gravy as her own more than once. We’re also eyeing the Blue Lake Beans with hazelnuts as a possible dupe, but the Southern Chocolate Pie is probably too good to fool anyone. 8009 Beverly Boulevard; 323-653-8009. Joan’s on Third: Joan has you covered from appetizers to dessert and everything in between. The menu includes such Thanksgiving staples as mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce, but also some more interesting fare, like zucchini fritters and butternut squash and pear soup. You can even order a whole turkey and, of course, pies galore. Orders can be placed at Third Street (323-655-2285) and Studio City (818-201-3900) locations.

M.B. Post: Just imagine how popular you’ll be when you show up with David LeFevre’s Bacon Cheddar Buttermilk Biscuits in tow. You can also get a slew of sides, from cranberry kumquat relish to pork sausage and brioche stuffing. Auntie Em’s Kitchen: Homey cooking is what Auntie Em’s does best, so we’re betting that this Eagle Rock restaurant’s take on Thanksgiving will hit all the right notes. The basics include organic mashed potatoes and roasted root vegetables, but we’re intrigued by options like the Chipotle Pumpkin Soup. Huckleberry: Cornbread pudding, roasted Brussels sprouts, turkey thighs with white wine, mushrooms, and thyme—these are the kinds of things you’ll find on Huckleberry’s special Thanksgiving to-go menu.
