L.A.’s sweet tooth set is in for a treat this Sunday. The third annual Bakers Will Bake Sale is taking place at the Hollywood Farmers’ Market and some of the biggest names in pastry are on the roster: We’re talking about Zoe Nathan (Huckleberry), Nicole Rucker (Cofax), Genevieve Gergis (Bestia), Zack Hall (Clark Street Bread) and a whole list (literally, check out the list below) of L.A.’s most talented dessert makers.
Bakers Will Bake is the brainchild of Roxana Jullapat of Elysian. Three years ago, while working with the Edible Schoolyard at the Larchmont Charter School, Jullapat noticed that the program was in serious need of equipment. “When I started volunteering there was nothing. There were really enthusiastic teachers that made it happen, but infrastructurally, there was very little,” she says.
That’s when she got the idea—inspired by a tweet from Craft L.A.’s Shannon Swindle—to pull together the city’s premier bakers and pastry chefs to raise money for the cause. The first bake sale in 2013 raised $3,000, affording the program a refrigerator and utility sink. Last year, Bakers Will Bake doubled the intake, bringing in $6,000 for the Garden School Foundation.
This time around, the organization will be donating proceeds to the Edible Schoolyard, a gardening and cooking program founded in 2009 as part of Alice Waters’ Chez Panisse Foundation. The group’s mission is to build a national pre-K-to-high-school curriculum that will transform the way kids think about food, farming, and the environment. Jullapat, who will be making granola, strawberry heart tarts, pumpkin bread, and Swedish gingersnaps for the event says she hopes to break the fundraising record again on Sunday.
“Obviously you always want to raise more money than you did before, so we’re hoping we can do that,” she says. “I think what has been really cool is that this is a relatively easy event to put together, and we are fiercely independent—everything we sell goes in an envelope to the school.”
