After revolutionizing the San Fernando Valley’s craft coffee scene, Compañía de Café is set to take on another overlooked neighborhood, South Gate.
As of Thursday Nov. 20, the new store will serve a unique Mexican-American inspired menu filled with housemade pastries and desserts, tortas, salads, tamales, and empanadas, all overseen by Executive Pastry Chef Tamara Davis, formerly of Boule and Bottega Louie. On the coffee side, Director of Coffee Operations Percy Ramirez, formerly of Intelligentsia and G&B Coffee, will offer a drink program featuring pour over coffees, carbonated cold brew coffee flavored with jamaica or tamarind, and mochas made with housemade chocolate ganache.
As with the SFV location, Compañía de Café will feature Chicano murals and art from local artists, including a 13- by 23-foot tiled mural created by Rebeca Mendez and made with tiles sourced from Guadalajara.
In our November Food Lover’s issue, we featured Miguel Angel Pozos, general manager of Compañía de Café, who said of opening in San Fernando: “It’s a big risk. If we opened in Beverly Hills, it would be a different story, but not in the Valley.” Given the success of the original location, South Gate seems to offer just as much potential.
