Road trip idea: There are two simultaneous food festivals in San Diego that are taking things to extremes on Mother’s Day weekend.
Gator by the Bay, May 7-10
This four-day music and food blowout features more than 85 performances on six stages, dance lessons, kid-friendly activities, and, most important, 10,000 pounds of crawfish trucked in from Louisiana. You’ll also be able to hit the festival’s French Quarter Food Court for po-boys, hot links, andouille sausage, jambalaya, gumbo (including gator gumbo), etouffee, beignets, bread pudding, pecan pie, and so many other Big Easy favorites. Plus, there are cooking demos if you want tips on how to make your own trinity at home.
Bacon & Barrels, May 9
Here’s a winning idea: Pair local chefs’ creative bacon dishes with craft beer, bourbon, wine, and scotch. This all-inclusive event features 100 food and beverage booths offering savory and sweet bacon bites, bacon cocktails, and plenty of small-batch liquor. Judges will taste each dish to crown the Jefe Del Porko, a title that will earn the winner an entry into the Bacon World Championship at the World Food Championships in Florida. Live music will include party-starting L.A. cover band Black Crystal Wolf Kids.
