When we first heard about the new two-story gastropub planned along Sawtelle’s “Little Osaka” strip, we were mildly intrigued, if not a little skeptical (gastropubs are a dime a dozen these days). It wasn’t until Plan Check, the brainchild of Terry Heller and Umami chef Ernesto Uchimura, started posting pictures of the soon-to-open restaurant’s menu that our taste buds started to truly tingle. It was food porn galore: a smoky fried chicken laced with green pimento cheese and ham, house smoked pastrami sandwiches with an embedded fried egg, and a pudding-laced banana cream cruller for dessert. If those pictures were a marketing ploy, they certainly worked. Here’s to hoping the food is as good as it looks.
The icing on the proverbial cake: Pablo Moix and Steve Livingi, the Harvard and Stone mixologists who have been popping up in every corner of town lately, are laying out a bar menu that will revolve around Japanese whiskey and feature a mysterious Midori cocktail (the melon liqueur isn’t just for sorority girls anymore!)
Plan Check is slated to open February 22, pending final city approval, until then you’ll have to drool along with the rest of us.
