The Science of Sushi at UCLA – 4/23
Food and science geeks unite at the latest in UCLA’s tastiest lecture series. L.A. sushi master Morihiro “Mori” Onodero and food scientist Ole Mouritsen are teaming up to discuss the inner workings of sushi. The author of several books about sushi and its relation to the body and the environment, Mouritsen will speak to the science underlying the delicacy while Onodero will discuss his partnership with a rice farm in Uruguay and his passion for local ingredients. The $25 lecture (with tastings!) begins at 7 p.m. More information.

Oysterpalooza at the Hungry Cat — 4/27
Chef David Lentz celebrates the three-year anniversary of Hungry Cat’s Santa Monica location with half-priced mollusks, an extended happy hour, anniversary cocktails, and specials including oyster po’ boys and grilled oysters. More information.

Los Angeles Mac and Cheese Takedown — 4/27
Finally, an event where it’s OK to be a total cheeseball. From 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, more than 20 local macaconi and cheese pros will compete for the title of “Best Mac” at the Bootleg Theater. Prizes include hundreds of dollars’ worth of cookware, not to mention bragging rights. The public can sample all the cheesiness for $15. More information.

Spice-Centric Dinner at Petty Cash Taqueria — 4/29
