Yes, my friends, sometimes even I, the carnivore’s omnivore, the guy who will eat just about anything with a back and four legs besides a table, need a little time-out from meat. It’s true: sometimes I eat the vegan way.
This Meatless Monday, I recommend that you let your mouth investigate an Asian vegan restaurant in Sherman Oaks called veSTATION Urban Organic Kitchen.
veSTATION creates pan-Asian plates that highlight the cuisines of Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, China, and Vietnam. Many of the non-salad entrees feature soy protein mock meats like soy fish, soy chicken, and soy steak.
The green curry soy chicken at veSTATION is probably one of the most flavorful and complex green curries I’ve ever experienced. With the traditional creamy, sweet, spicy, green chilied curry as its foundation, the rest of this classic dish is all about the layers of flavor from zucchini, green beans, basil, bell peppers, eggplant, broccoli, and lotus seeds.
Though the “meat” of the curry is a soy chicken (and, quite frankly, is the weakest element in the bowl), the vegetables really give veSTATION’s green curry its “meatiness.” The zucchini, broccoli, eggplant, green beans, and bell peppers are fresh and robust with flavor. As a bonus, the lotus seeds add a nutty pop.
When this curry is poured over brown rice (forget the quinoa option, it’s too wimpy), you won’t miss the meat at all. You’ll probably even feel a little better about it.
