Saying Americans eat a lot of chicken wings on Super Bowl Sunday is an understatement, or should I say, a deflated statement. (Take that, Tom Brady.) According to the National Chicken Council’s 2014 Wing Report (yeah, that’s a thing), an estimated 1.25 billion chicken wings were crushed last year during the Super Bowl.
This Super Bowl Sunday, L.A.’s Plan Check restaurants (Sawtelle, Fairfax, and Downtown) will each add 120 wings to this year’s tally with its wing-eating contest. While best known for gourmet burgers between “crunch buns” and bedazzled with “ketchup leather,” Plan Check also offers seriously amazing chicken like the Smokey Fried Chicken and Buck Fifty Wings.
If you have an inner Joey “Jaws” Chestnut or Kobayashi and you love wings, then this is your chance to get off the couch and prove to the world that you’re good at something. Get to any of the three Plan Check restaurants by 2 p.m. to sign up for the contest, then at 2:30 p.m. it’s time to rumble and see how fast you can de-bone a dozen wings with your mouth. Whoever finishes the wings first is the winner and struts off with a fancy trophy and some J.P. Wiser’s Rye Whisky. There’s no fee to enter, but there’s a maximum of 10 participants per location.
Even if you don’t partake in the wingsanity, you can try special tailgated-themed dishes chef Ernesto Uchimura has whipped up for Sunday: 9 Layer Dip, Spicy Chorizo Chili Burger, and Chorizo Chili Cheese Fries. A bacon-infused cocktail dubbed The Pig Skin will wash it all down nicely. If you’re extra thirsty or have drinking buddies, the 12th Man Punch Bowl concocted with rye whisky, orgeat, bitters, and bubbly will have you cheering.
FYI, so we’re all clear, these wings are from chickens not seahawks. Wing it on!
