Andrew Steiner of the new Andrew’s Cheese Shop on Montana Ave. is now overseeing the menu du fromage at Rustic Canyon. Steiner says he plans to the rotate cheeses almost weekly, emphasizing artisanal California cheeses plus a few international rarities.
His first offerings include:
Fiscalini Cheddar: from a small offshoot of a big dairy farm in Modesto.
Hoja Santo: a Belgian style goat’s milk cheese from Texas that’s wrapped in the leaves of a Mexican herb
Testun al Barolo: a hard-to-find goat/sheep mix that is aged in old Barolo casks in Piedmont.
Keeping it local, Rustic Canyon also recently started serving coffee and espresso from Santa Monica’s Caffe Luxxe. The staff is being trained by the Luxxe owner Mark Wain. Let’s hope he can teach them to make the pretty rosetta patterns out of latté foam that Luxxe is known for. I’m a sucker for that stuff.
