Morning After: Whole Foods Beer Dinner

50

OK, so it’s two mornings after… Wednesday night was the first Whole Foods beer tasting dinner at the new Pasadena store, organized by none other than LA Mag contributor Randy Clemens. In the upstairs wine bar area, five courses were paired with various beers from the Indian Wells Brewing Company up in Inyokern, most famous for their Mojave Red and Lobotomy Bock. Brewmaster Rick Lovett was there providing a seemingly endless stream of commentary, explaining everything from the difference between various hops to how he came up with his delicious Orange Blossom Amber (he ate a bunch of orange slices for dinner, then threw the rinds in the brew). The result was an informative—and TASTY—evening. I’m looking forward to the next one (TBA).

Highlights: Chipotle carnitas tamale paired with the aforementioned Orange Blossom Amber. Oh, and the Beeramisu, with ladyfingers dipped in Lobotomy Bock.

Biggest Surprise: That Orange Blossom Amber (this is the last mention, I swear). I usually hate fruit beers, but this—made just with the rind—has a citrus aroma, but no sweetness. Instead, just a snappy, bitter bite from all those rinds which really brought out the hops. I’m a convert.
