These Might Be The Happiest Pastries On The Planet

Rainbows. Unicorns. Hearts. Bliss
347

I am standing in a line at B. Candy in Corona del Mar buying a paper mache rainbow that has unicorn earrings inside of it and a rainbow brite cake. These are not for my nieces or my nephews or for their children—they are for me.

The four people behind me in line buying Lucky Charms ice creams barely come up to my waist. The rest of the crowd in the colorful shop are in their 20s, 30s, and 40s and are taking Instagram snaps of perfect rainbow cookies with fluffy white frosting clouds and petit lemon cupcakes with hearts lodged ever-so-carefully in the multi-colored pastel sweetness. I am completely happy. So is everyone else. Need some bliss, like, right now? Check out these places (from LA to OC) where unicorns exist and one color is simply not enough.

Big Sugar Bakeshop
DTLA – Studio City

Mary Odson and Lisa Ritter’s shops with the light blue doors make rainbow sugar cookies with eyes blinking at you and cupcakes and cakes with multi-colored hearts covering nearly every inch. They also have been known to use a lot of sprinkles and Fruit Loops on their cupcakes and cakes. Their popular vanilla rainbow cake (on the menu since 2010) can be special ordered, but you can often find it in the case to grab whole or by the slice.

B. Candy
Corona del Mar – Huntington Beach

It used to be you went over the county line to buy fireworks and booze, now do it for rainbow brite cake and unicorn sugar cookies. The rainbow brite cake is a hockey puck shaped color explosion wrapped in icing and covered in nonpareils. Their rainbow sugar cookies are intricate artworks of saturated color and frosting. There is more of a baked goodies selection in the Corona location.

Cake Monkey Bakery

While they do a mean cookie here, we gravitate towards their Confetti Cake that is it’s own individual size and three layers of vanilla cake, vanilla buttercream, and sprinkles. The Vanilla Gorilla has vanilla cake with Tahitian vanilla buttercream and sugar sparkles for those of you who like your colorfulness to stay classy.

Hello Kitty Café Pop-Up
Irvine

ITS SO CUTE

You can’t have a happy pastry list without including Sanrio’s perky feline, can you? We know we are venturing into the OC again but how can you not for adorable petit fours and cookies and other sweets? The Pop-Up will be there until the end of the year. The Hello Kitty Café Truck also makes it way to LA County often—to SRO crowds.

The Cake Mamas
Glendora

I can’t get over these unicorn cookies – adorable! #thecakemamas #glendora

How can you not like a bakery whose motto is: “Because life can be as sweet as you make it…” and are Cake Wars Champs (Season 1) and Cupcake Wars Champ (Season 4)? You can’t. You just can’t. Their unicorn sweets reach a whole new level.

Au Fudge
West Hollywood

Jessica Biel’s fancy tot hangout is beyond chic and it does make an adorable, perfectly coifed, custom unicorn cake.

Are they just happier in the OC? They might be. Yet another beyond adorable, sweet bakery that utilizes every color in the rainbow and is beyond liberal in it’s use of hearts, sprinkles, and unicorn horns (and ears). They also make a whole line of treats infused with booze.
