Mid-City Gets a Taste of Good Girl Dinette with a Pop-up

Chef Diep Tran brings her Vietnamese comfort food to Bloom Cafe this month, and it could lead to a sister location

People drive from all over town for the Vietnamese dishes at Highland Park’s Good Girl Dinette, but now Mid-City residents can get a taste, too, without braving the 110. This month, owner/chef Diep Tran will be taking over the kitchen at Bloom Cafe on Pico Boulevard, starting next Friday, April 10, (dine-in only) from 5 to 10 p.m. Even more exciting for the neighborhood is that the collaboration could lead to more permanent digs.

“I have been contemplating opening a Good Girl Dinette in Mid-City for some time, and Arnaud Palatan, owner of Bloom Cafe, offered to host a series of pop-ups at his cafe as a way to introduce the restaurant to the neighborhood,” Tran says. “If all goes well, as we think it will, Arnaud and I might just collaborate on finding a space for a future Mid-City Good Girl Dinette.”

The pop-up menu is smaller than what’s offered at the Highland Park location, but it will include most of Good Girl’s greatest hits, minus the noodle salads. Tran’s crispy imperial rolls, chicken pho, and peppery pork confit will all be available along with two banh mi sandwiches—the oyster mushroom, a personal favorite, is a great vegetarian option that will even wow meat lovers. They’ll also be pouring cold-brew Vietnamese coffee to get the weekend off to a roaring start. And, to answer the most burning question of all: Yes, there will be spicy fries with cilantro-Maggi mayo.
