Local IACP Cookbook Award Finalists! (And Why I Am A Hoarder)

356

I, like many, have a cookbook problem. The picture above shows about one quarter of the ultra-slim, pared down collection that fits within quick reach on my office shelf. But at home I have countless more shelves, closets, and structurally unsound stacks piled with culinary tomes. I buy them at yard sales, thrift stores, and fancy bookshops. They’re given to me by loved ones, eager authors, and persistent publishing houses. I keep them all—every last one—except for a precious few that I manage to part with once a year for the Hanukkah fundraising raffle at a local synagogue.

The sick part is that I seldom cook from recipes. Most of the books I just keep around for comfort, inspiration, and the reassuring knowledge that I could, at any moment, find at least five different approaches to braised lamb shoulder, tarte tatin, or wild mushroom risotto.

So why am I confessing my borderline hoarder behavior right here and now? Because today the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP)  announced its finalists for the 2011 IACP awards! The organization honors cookbooks, blogs, and other food-centric articles every year, and is often a good predictor for the James Beard Book Award  nominations which will be announced later this month.. The full list of finalists is below, but we wanted to give an especially hearty CONGRATS to some of our local nominees:

Good to the Grain, by former Spago/Campanile pastry chef  Kim Boyce and Squid Ink’s  own Amy Scattergood, was nominated for the 2011 baking cookbook of the year. Anyone who’s tried the brown-butter scones or date and nut bread understands why.

Also, a more-local-than-ever Barbara Fairchild was nominated for her work on Bon Appetit Desserts: The Cookbook for All Things Sweet and Wonderful, which is just as advertised.

And who can forget the star of Sunday’s big show, Mr. Jonathan Gold, who has been nominated for “The Hungry Metropolis,” his contribution to Saveur’s  Los Angeles issue last February.

Every book below is probably worth picking up. (Boozehound and Salted: A Manifesto on the World’s Most Essential Mineral, with Recipes are two more of my favorites). The winners will be announced at a June 2 gala in Austin, TX. Yee haw.
