Le Comptoir by the Numbers

Gary Menes opens his counter-dining experience with a produce-driven six-course tasting menu at Koreatown’s Hotel Normandie

Chef Gary Menes has opened his long-awaited Le Comptoir at Koreatown’s Hotel Normandie. Before he unveiled his 10-seat counter-dining experience last week, Le Comptoir had been a roving popup for years. Let’s break down, by the numbers, why this precise but relaxed “hyper-seasonal” restaurant (with produce from local farms including Menes’ own, no tablecloths, and no dress code) is big news in L.A.

10 – number of seats at Le Comptoir

2 – number of seatings each night (6 and 8:30 p.m.)

$67 – cost of the produce-focused tasting menu at Le Comptoir (the menu will change weekly; the Los Angeles Times has details on what was served on the second day of service )

6 – courses in Le Comptoir’s tasting menu

$71.94  – price of six ⅓-pound cheeseburgers at Cassell’s, also newly opened in Hotel Normandie

$14, $15, $16, $90 – price of various supplements in a Le Comptoir “fall menu 2014” posted online ($14 was for Santa Barbara rock crab with honey tangerine, cauliflower, and sauce maltaise while $90 was for Acquerello Carnaroli rice with white truffles)

$40 – price of Le Comptoir’s five-glass wine pairing

$25 – price of corkage at Le Comptoir for a 750ml bottle

$8 – price of Le Comptoir’s “hand crafted single origin coffee,” which must be ordered at the beginning of the meal, according to the fall menu posted online

2000 – year Menes joined Thomas Keller at the French Laundry

2006 – year Menes opened Palate Food + Wine in Glendale
