For those of you in the prone-to-nostalgia demographic, take a moment to close your eyes, inhale deeply through your nose, and cherish the memory of L.A.’s Tail O’the Pup hot dog stand. For those of you in the went-to-see-Sausage-Party-with-the-guys-last-weekend demographic, take a moment to note the two to three other things this structure resembles besides a hot dog, and let out a quiet, immature snort.
Now that that’s out of the way, the news: In the greatest comeback story since Cinderella Man, Tail O’the Pup will officially reopen on September 8th… as a food truck. The truck, the first of several, will be dishing up classics like The Baseball Special (hot dog with mustard, relish, and onion—i.e. a regular hot dog) and new recipes like The Pastrami Dog (exactly what you imagine) in the Opening Ceremony parking lot on La Cienega.
Per the above photo, the truck won’t be shaped like a giant hot dog a la the Wienermobile. It’ll just be shaped like a regular food truck. That’s a little disappointing (the more food-shaped vehicles in the world, the better), but it’s made up for by the fact that the actual, original Tail O’the Pup hot dog stand will be returning to L.A. in early 2017. It’s reportedly still in the process of refurbishment, but it’s definitely the real deal and not some dumb replica as confirmed by the company on Facebook. The stand will be reinstated as part of a new Tail O’the Pup restaurant in Downtown’s latest gargantuan mixed use complex The Bloc.
