L.A.’s Total Ice Cream Domination Continues

Three new openings, led by Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, bring even more ice cream to our perpetually summering city

Well, since L.A.’s weather has defaulted to always summer, the city’s current ice cream influx/frenzy make sense. The fact that we’ve been turning into America’s ice cream capital, one big-name opening at a time–Sweet Rose Creamery, Three Twins, and Salt & Straw to name a few–is definitely a silver lining to the whole end-of-the-world thing, and this month brings even more frosty sweet-treat news. Here are some ice cream headlines to scream about:

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams comes to town
The beloved Ohio-based brand founded by Jeni Britton Bauer is set to open its first West Coast location this Friday in Los Feliz. Everything, from waffle cones to the macarons they use for ice cream sandwiches, is handmade, and you can also score sundaes in two sizes with toppings like fresh whipped cream and smoked almonds. Their refreshing Wheatgrass, Pear, & Vinho Verde sorbet was created especially for Angelenos (boy, do they have us pegged), but we’ll be getting a double scoop of Goat Cheese with Red Cherries ice cream and Lemon Buttermilk Tart frozen yogurt, a creamy-delicious invention with ribbons of lemon curd and big chunks of shortbread.

Quenelle opens in San Marino
Maker of luscious things like strawberry shortcake ice cream and orange cream pops, Quenelle has just debuted its second location in San Marino. Owner John Park, a pastry chef who wowed at Lukshon and Providence, opened his first shop in Burbank in 2013, which he followed up with the Alhambra shaved ice spot Ice Que earlier this year. Per usual, flavors will rotate based on seasonal availability and Park’s whims (its best not to get too attached to any one frozen treat), but there’s something this store has that the original doesn’t: pie! Three words: à la mode. Plus, this shop has chairs and tables, so sit back and enjoy.

McConnell’s gets ready to scoop in Studio City
The venerable, 70-year-old Santa Barbara ice cream chain will be Joan’s on Third’s new next-door neighbor soon. Eater reports that McConnell’s, which made its L.A. debut at Grand Central Market last summer, will open its second local spot in a former tailor shop in Studio City. Details are still elusive, but we can already taste the Churros con Leche and Chocolate Covered Strawberries and Eureka Lemon & Marionberries.
