The fact that we’ve now written about Seinfeld TWICE this week—on a food blog, no less—is a pretty strong sign of how culturally relevant the show still remains, even though it’s been 14 years since the final episode aired. (Feeling old yet?)
Just a few days after we covered how to host your own Festivus feast, in comes news that Jason Alexander, the man forever cursed and blessed with being better known as George Costanza, will be serving soup at Pavilions Supermarket in Burbank tomorrow. Soup? Yes, soup.
Turns out that soup-master extraordinaire Al Yeganeh—famously parodied and immortalized as the “Soup Nazi” in Seinfeld’s seventh season—has parlayed his notoriety into a burgeoning food business. The Original SoupMan (Yeganeh is none too fond of his more famous moniker) now boasts 13 franchise locations and packages four varieties of soups—Chicken Noodle, Lentil, Lobster Bisque, and Tomato Bisque— for purchase at select retail locations.
Jason Alexander, a partner in the business, comments via press release:
“Many people don’t know our famous ‘soup kitchen’ episode on Seinfeld was inspired by an actual soup restaurant off 8th Avenue in New York. The soup recipes created by Al Yeganeh are considered by me and thousands of New Yorkers as some of the best soups in the world. And the Zagat’s Food Guide agrees. Now that The Original SoupMan recipes are becoming available in supermarket soup aisles, the whole country will get to experience what we already know so well. I’m hoping everyone will come to enjoy the soup so many have been lining up for years to get. And don’t worry, nothing can go wrong. Cause this time — well, it’s soup for everybody.”
Womp womp. Alexander will be doling out soup samples in Burbank tomorrow from 12 to 3:30 p.m. We can’t imagine how he’ll be able to hold a smile for 210 minutes while being undoubtedly barraged with every attendee’s best delivery of “No soup for you!” But he’s a pro, and that’s the name of the game. If you stop by to get a taste, do report back and let us know what you think.
