During a live press conference and twitter feed this morning, the James Beard Foundation announced its list of finalists for its Restaurant and Chef Awards. While we were pleasantly surprised, for once, to see a slew of Angelenos in the mix during the semi-finals, most of those names have disappeared this round. (You were robbed, Karen Hatfield, Kris Yenbamroong, Josef Centeno, Michael Cimarusti, Andrew Kirschner, David LeFevre, John Rivera Sedlar, and Ricardo Zarate!)
But all is not lost: We kept a few names in a few of the bigger categories. Representing L.A. at May 6 awards ceremony in New York are Piero Selvaggio (Valentino) and Caroline Styne (Lucques) for Outstanding Restaurateur, Nancy Silverton (Mozza) and Suzanne Goin (Lucques) for Outsanding Chef, and Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo (Animal) for Best Chef: West. So, while we may have gone down in quantity of nominees, we held our ground in terms of quality.
