Glazed Donut Bistro opened its doors to the doughnut loving masses last Thursday. The petite shop sits beneath an awning the color of burnt raspberries on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood. Inside, plump rounds of fried dough, shiny with glaze, are lined up like soldiers behind a glass case.
You might notice the bourbon pecan pie first; it looks like a pecan sticky bun with a hole in the center. There’s a lemon meringue that’s filled with bright lemon curd and wears a square hat of toasted meringue. On the savory side, find toasty ham and cheese inside of a square doughnut and a shrimp roll stuffed into a slightly sweet Long John. Dine in and each doughnut order will come with a complimentary side of sauce, syrup, or extra filling.
Pastry chef Gena Lora, formerly of Baked in Montrose and also a chef instructor at Le Cordon Blue in Pasadena, is behind the candy-colored rounds and savory lunch fritters. Along with owner Harry Ben-Zvi—whose background in Las Vegas means he’s no stranger to fancy sweets—the pair have jumped on the gourmet doughnut bandwagon with the intent of creating a place that’s not just for breakfast or dessert.
There’s Stumptown coffee and champagne—making it an ideal spot for morning meetings, afternoon pick-me-ups, and evening rendezvous. Unfortunately, after a very busy weekend, the shop has limited their hours. Glazed Donut Bistro now serves Tuesday and Wedesday from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.; Thursday through Saturday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. and then 6 p.m. until midnight; and Sunday from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.
