When Diep Tran sold Eagle Rock’s Blue Hen Vietnamese restaurant, she started the Good Girl underground supper club to satisfy her drive to cook. After much success, including segments on the Food Network and KCRW’s Good Food, she’s set to open Good Girl Dinette in Highland Park this Friday. The menu will be Tran’s strong suit—modern takes on Vietnamese comfort foods using local, organic, sustainable, and seasonal ingredinets—and the space looks like a bright orange sunburst with exposed brick walls and a series of long benches. The Good Girl blog documents the process of opening the restaurant from start to finish; much of the funding, labor, and support came straight from supper club fans and regulars.
Here are a few teaser menu items, with a full menu available soon!
Appetizers: Garlic Turmeric Chips, Vietnamese Imperial Rolls.
Soups and Noodles: Vegetarian Spice Lemongrass Noodle Soup, Grandpa’s Porridge.
Rice dishes: Braised Pork, Caramelized Leek and Daikon
Savory Pies: Lemongrass Curry (chicken and veggie), Beef or
Kid’s Menu (how cute!): Curry Pies, Pint Size Pho, and
Milk and Baguettes.
A little history: Tran’s family founded Pho 79—one of Orange County’s first Vietnamese restaurants and still often hailed as the area’s best.
