Once a Winchell’s doughnut shop, Samosa House East is a dramatic boost to the Washington Boulevard food scene. The contemporary take on India’s vegetarian cuisine includes Mumbai-style street foods such as bhel puri, a crunchy chutney-doused, salad like snack ($3.49), and the namesake veggie-filled dough triangles ($1.50). A rotating selection of curries, dals, and kormas fills out the three-item combination plate ($8). Th e kitchen gives a big nod to vegans, eschewing butter-based ghee for olive oil and replacing yogurt with ground nuts in some creamy sauces. The next generation: The restaurant took root when Phulan Chander started selling handmade snacks from Bharat Bazaar, her family’s Westside grocery store. A niece and her son expanded the shop to include a quick-serve deli. The new sibling down the street boasts all recyclable utensils. » 10700 Washington Blvd., Culver City, 310-559-6350.
