Portland is invading L.A., and we might be mad about it if it wasn’t rolling in with such good food and drink stuffed in its pockets. Salt and Straw, Pok Pok (with another coming soon!), Stumptown Coffee, and, officially opening its doors on Abbot Kinney Wednesday Oct 21, Blue Star Donuts. But, before the store opens and you need to start exchanging dough for dough, keep the money in your pocket and get your first donut for free on Monday October 19 starting at 9 a.m. OK Pacific Northwest—we see you!
This will be Blue Star Donuts’ sixth location, but the first outside of Portland and Tokyo. Owners Katie Poppe and Micah Camden first captured the attention of the donut loving world with their unique flavor combinations like blueberry bourbon basil, Cointreau crème brulée, and matcha cake. But their staying power lies in the commitment to detail: Blue Star’s donuts are exclusively fried in rice oil, the brioche-style dough takes more than 18 hours to make, and they only use European butter.
With the announcement that Costa Mesa’s Sidecar Donuts will be opening a Santa Monica location, it looks like the Westside has taken over the donut game—it just needed a little assist from the O.C. and Portland.
