Food Lover: Jimmy Williams, Gardener to the Stars

The co-owner of Logan’s Gardens and co-author of <em>From Seed to Skillet</em> manages the edible landscaping of Hollywood A-listers, including Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner

Here, the former fashion designer-turned-edible garden master talks about what spurred him to switch industries and go green:

“I was raised in Southampton with seven brothers and five sisters. We lived with my grandmother and grew all our own food in a huge garden. As a kid, I’d rather garden than do anything, but I ended up in the fashion industry. My first store was in an old Victorian house in Amagansett with a big bay window and Persian rugs on the floor. I would refurbish vintage pieces and sell them alongside custom designs and European ready-to-wear. We had all the famous clients: Jacqueline Kennedy, Truman Capote, and Andy Warhol all shopped there. In the early 1970s, I moved to Manhattan to design knitwear for Calvin Klein, and as a favor I helped design my friend’s rooftop garden. She was the first person who told me, ‘You know, Jimmy, you should really go into this business.’ ”
