Check The Digest and Liquid L.A. this week and next as we pick local gifts for all the food-and-drinks lovers on your list.
Unless you’re food-world royalty, it might be hard to swing an invite to Mimi Mok and Jet Tila’s dinner parties. The partners in Stir Market are part of a roving group of restaurant insiders who regularly host bashes attended by various Food Network personalities, “Top Chef” contestants, and local culinary stars.
Lucky for everyone else, Stir Market, Mok and Tila’s new 4,000-square-foot European-inspired food hall, sells products like Eddie’s BBQ Pork Rub ($9.95). The recipe belongs to Ed Murphy, the Dolby Theater managing director who’s responsible for the meats at many of these private bashes.
At Stir Market, you can create a personalized gift basket by picking your own assortment of artisanal products from some of the country’s most respected purveyors. Selections could include We Love Jam’s Blenheim apricot jam, chorizo from Olympic Provisions in Portland, and mayonnaise from chef Sam Mason’s Empire Mayo in Brooklyn.
But we recommend that you opt for items that were created on-site at Stir Market. Along with the pork rub, you can give meat mavens the gift of sweet apple pork brine ($6.95) or a Moroccan herb blend ($7.95) that works well for chicken tagines. Stir Market executive chef Chris Barnett is also selling his family-recipe Nana Bangs cranberry sauce ($7.95). Plus, the housemade radishes ($5.95), pickled in vinegar, bay leaves, thyme, and garlic, are divine as a snack or chopped over meat or fish. If you want to sweeten the basket, there’s Stir’s vanilla bean sugar ($4.50), espresso brown sugar, made with Intelligentsia espresso ($4.50), or pumpkin spice sugar ($3.95)
If your gift to yourself this holiday season is easy gift-giving without having to make decisions, though, Stir Market also has prepacked gift boxes, including the $85 “locals only” assortment with nine Southern California products like Strand Brewing 24th St. Pale Ale from Torrance and Bloom honey from Westlake Village.
