Dishing on L.A.: Wil Wheaton

You may know Wil Wheaton as Wesley Crusher from Star Trek: The Next Generation, Gordie from Stand by Me, or a fictionalized version of himself on The Big Bang Theory. Maybe you’re one of the millions (literally) of folks who celebrate his many layers of geekdom—homebrewing, tabletop games, comics, etc.—with him on Twitter, Google+, or his blog. But ask Wil Wheaton who he is, and he’ll likely tell you, “I’m just this guy, you know?” That simple question aside, I reached out to him to learn a little more about the things that make his stomach happy.

Commodore Wil Wheaton, 40.

Hidden talents or superpowers?
I never get lost. Once I’ve been to a place, I have perfect direction while I’m there. 

If you had a business card, and you needed to put a job title on it, what would it be?
Chief Officer of Awesome 

How long have you lived in L.A.?
38 of my 40 years. 

What are some of your favorite places to eat around town?
Hatfield’s, Poquito Mas, the Pub at Golden Road, the Luggage Room Pizzeria in Pasadena, Sushi Roku in Pasadena, my dining room. 

How about places to drink? Cocktails, beer, wine, coffee, tea… pick your poison(s).

Any favorite on-set eats?
They always give us great vegetarian food on the set at The Big Bang Theory, but the best thing I ever had on the set was chicken mole from the crafty guy’s abuela‘s recipe on The Day Lincoln Was Shot

How are you in the kitchen? Anything you’re particularly good (or bad) at making?
I’m very good at following recipes. I’m less good at not screwing them up. 

Any favorite markets?
Handy Market in Burbank, Hows Market in San Marino. Trader Joe’s everywhere. 

What do you feel is the most exciting thing happening in the local food scene right now?
It’s a small sample size and I can’t see past my confirmation bias, but I’m thrilled that L.A. is opening more brewpubs and proper craft breweries. (I’m looking at you, Eagle Rock and Golden Road.)

What would you want your final meal to be? And what would you want to drink along with it? Any music playing in the background?
Since I plan to be very, very, very old when I die, it will be something mushy and bland so as to not offend my delicate sensibilities as I prepare to be uploaded into a cyborg that is powered by beer. The theme to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is playing on a loop for reasons I cannot disclose at this time.
