Pizza is a perennial takeout and delivery staple, and that’s sure to continue to be the case during L.A.’s ban on dining out during the coronavirus outbreak. Diversify your NY-style pie routine with these Chicago-style deep-dish options. Sure, some call it a “fucking casserole,” but when it’s this good, who cares?
Until recently, crowds were spending hours lined up at Gino’s East in Sherman Oaks for a taste of what many consider the best deep dish in town. Luckily for those jonesing during the mandated restaurant shutdown, Gino’s offers takeout.
Recently resurrected by a superfan, this small storefront on the Eastside makes a clean and well-composed pie. The sauce has a nice sweetness; the cheese is light and fresh—but in a quantity more likely to please a cardiologist than a true deep-dish devotee. Their pies are available for takeout or delivery via Postmates. 2734 N. Eastern Ave., El Sereno.
Actually located in Mid-City, this spot whips up a sturdy specimen with zesty tomato sauce, substantial mozzarella, and a serviceable crust. At times the presentation can feel sloppy, but it still pleases those in need of a fix. Available for delivery via GrubHub and ChowNow. 6116½ W. Pico Blvd., Pico-Robertson.
This popular kitschy-cool pizzeria has a menu headlined by Chicago deep dish, but with its chunky tomato sauce and a hefty cornmeal crust, Masa’s pizza is more of a tasty California cousin than the genuine Midwestern article. Yes, it also has vegan deep dish. No, I won’t try it. Available for takeout and for delivery via Caviar, which offers “contact-free” delivery. 1800 W. Sunset Blvd., Echo Park.
Working out of a low-key truck bearing the four-star flag of Chicago, this scrappy upstart turns out precisely constructed pizzas with the right ratio of mozzarella to sauce to crust. Bonus: It also dishes out Windy City favorites Italian beef and Vienna Beef hot dogs. They’ll be doing deliveries starting March 21. Follow @chi.pie331 on Instagram for locations.
