Chef Andrew Kirschner is deep-rooted in L.A.’s beachtown fine-dining scene. After working at Venice legend Joe’s in the early 2000s and bouncing around a few other kitchens, he finally opened his flagship rustic spot Tar & Roses in 2012, and the nautical sequel Santa Monica Yacht Club a few years after that. Now, Kirschner has earned his status as a Santa Monica culinary legend. When he’s not frying up smelt or turning and burning whole goats (yeah, you can get a whole goat at Tar & Roses) in the kitchen, what’s he eating? These are Andrew Kirschner’s five favorite dishes in L.A.
1. Duck Liver Mousse at République
“Walter Manzke is the master of classic French cuisine in my opinion. I ate there recently and was blown away by the duck liver mouse.—the best I’ve ever had!”
2. Bagel and Lox at Wexler’s Deli
‘It’s the best in the city, hands down. And they are opening next door to me so I couldn’t be happier now that I can enjoy it every day!”
3. Omakase at Sushi Gen
“Most definitely my favorite go-to sushi spot. It’s always delicious and they serve me something different every time I’m there.”
4. Literally Any Pizza at Gjelina
“I was there for lunch recently and had the duck sausage pie—I still think it’s some of the best pizza in the city. Travis’ rustic sensibility towards cuisine is right up my alley.”
5. Scallops Oreganata at Scopa Italian Roots
“It is such a simple dish that it relies on its execution. It’s a total standout dish on the menu: simple, delicious, and most importantly, perfectly cooked.
