We’ve got Valentine’s Day coming up on Wednesday, and since L.A. Mag hearts you, dear reader, we’ve compiled a list of things to do around the city that we think you’ll love.
Monday: Roxane Gay at Hammer Museum
The Hammer’s “Some Favorite Writers” series continues with one of our favorites, Roxane Gay. The cultural critic, memoirist, story author, advice columnist, and comic book creator (is there anything she can’t write?) will read from Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body, and participate in a conversation with UCLA professor Mona Simpson.
Gather your Galentines for a lady-focused beer party at female-led craft brewery Dry River. A $50 ticket includes three tasting pours of their newest sour beers, a DIY succulent planter workshop by Plant Babes, and a guided session on self-love from healer Darlene Valencia, and a gift bag. If you’re looking to commemorate the night in a permanent way, cool-girl tattoo artist Diana Bustamante will be offering appointments for on-site tattoos.
Wednesday: Lucha VaVOOM presents “Ooh La La Lucha”
Still looking for the perfect Valentine’s Day date night? Lucha VaVOOM returns to the Mayan Theater for a special romance-themed edition of their show, featuring a mix of lucha libre wrestling, comedy, burlesque, mime, roller skating, aerial gymnastics, and more.
Thursday: NBA All-Star 2018
The NBA is in town for all things All-Star, bringing along a stadium-load of pop-ups, parties, and fan experiences. If you didn’t snag court-side tickets, you can still explore the free NBA Crossover Experience, check out cool shoes and live music at 747 Warehouse by Adidas, enjoy the NBA on TNT American Express Road Show (hello, Kendrick Lamar!) or, hey, enter our own sweepstakes to win tickets to attend events including the exclusive celebrity game.
Friday: Lunar New Year
According to the lunar calendar, we’re entering the Year of the Dog today. There are parades and celebrations aplenty for this auspicious occasion, all across the region. Check out our guide to some of the best events.
