The biggest story out of the 2016 Sundance Film Festival was Nate Parker’s Birth of a Nation, the feature film that tells the story of Nat Turner, who spearheaded a slave rebellion in Virginia in 1831. Purchased by Fox Searchlight for $17.5 million, Birth of a Nation set a record price for a film out of Sundance.
Now, the rest of the world can finally see what all the hullabaloo was about. The trailer for the film — which is slated for theatrical release on October 7, 2016 — dropped today. Set over the haunting melody of Billy Holiday’s Strange Fruit, it paints a picture of Turner as a man conflicted, and finally compelled to act.
