This Weekend: The Flying Dutchman

Wagner’s phantasmagorical dream comes to the L.A. Opera

In 1839, on a voyage to London, Richard Wagner conceived The Flying Dutchman, an otherworldly opera about a ghost ship wandering the oceans. More traditional than LA Opera’s 2010 take on the Ring cycle, this production stays true to Wagner’s phantasmagorical dream, thanks in part to costumes designed by Andrea Schmidt-Futterer. “My inspirations were the shapes of 19th-century folk costumes and science fiction movies,” she says. “The stainless steel set of Raimund Bauer, with its reflective floor and hard lights, needed contrast and sharp silhouettes.”
