This Is the Best: You’re The Worst Was Renewed for a Third Season

The 30-minute FXX dramedy will return next summer

Ride-or-die Angelenos have one thing in common: we love this city. We love it for its year-round sun, we love it for its late-summer rain, we love it for its coffee shops and noir history and pretentious cocktails and local taquerias. And clearly Stephen Falk, the creator behind FXX’s You’re the Worst (arguably one of the top five shows on TV at the moment), is one of us.

That’s why we are downright giddy that the show has been renewed for a third season, which, according to Deadline, will air next summer. The renewal comes despite the show’s low ratings in its second season; critics love it, with just about every review singing its praises.

FX Networks’ Nick Grad told Deadline that Falk “is one of the best new talents in comedy—as funny, thoughtful, and original as You’re the Worst, and we can’t wait to see what he comes up with next.”

In case you’re not watching, You’re the Worst follows Silver Lake/Echo Park residents Jimmy (Chris Geere) and Gretchen (Aya Cash), both 30, as they navigate their new relationship while trying to remain cool and unconventional. The first season featured them defying anything that seems like something “normal” people would do; trying to have sex without feelings and then getting feelings anyway; and, finally, moving in together after a vibrator malfunction burned Gretchen’s apartment down. Season two, however, skewed much more dark, with Gretchen spiraling into an unmanageable depression and Jimmy trying unsuccessfully to help.

The show is as much a love letter to L.A. as it is a love letter to functional-because-of-their-dysfunction relationships. On any given episode, Jimmy, Gretchen, and their squad drink-all-day brunches for Sunday Funday run into cheeseball producers at obnoxious Hollywood bars and say things like, “Sam released Shitstain’s chinchilla into Griffith Park. This feud’s out of control.”

You’re the Worst‘s season two penultimate episode will air tonight on FXX at 10:30 p.m.
