Summer is here and the city is heating up with fun things to do. To help you get to the good stuff, we’ve picked the best things to do this week in L.A.
Monday: Coco at Melrose Rooftop Cinema
The delightful, heartstring-pulling Disney flick Coco screens tonight at one of our favorite outdoor movie series, Melrose Rooftop Cinema. Enjoy the film from the comfort of loungers with a cocktail in hand and a view of the West Hollywood skyline.
Your life could probably use a little more “cosmic femme punk,” and Taleen Kali is just the person to give it to you. The local musician’s solo debut just dropped (you may have seen it on Pitchfork’s picks for the summer) and sees her evolving the sound she was known for around town with her band project, Tülips.
Wednesday: Animal Collective Plays Sung Tongs
Tickets sold out quickly for Animal Collective’s first night at the Theatre at Ace, so they’ve added this second night to the stand. Long-time fans will revel in the nostalgia at these full-album shows, in which the band will perform their acclaimed 2004 release Sung Tongs in its entirety.
Thursday: L.A. Sparks vs Minnesota Lynx
This rematch of the 2017 WNBA championship series between the Sparks and their rivals the Lynx comes at a crucial point in this year’s season. If you consider yourself a basketball fan, but haven’t made it to a Sparks game lately, you’re missing out on some of the best fundamental skills–and sharpest footwork–in the sport.
Friday: Femi Kuti & the Positive Force
Femi Kuti started performing music at 15, in the band of his superstar father, Fela Kuti. He has followed the family tradition of mixing powerful messages of political protest with an upbeat Afrobeat sound. He and his band the Positive Force, which also features his sisters Yeni and Sola as lead dancers, headline the El Rey tonight. If our recommendation doesn’t convince you, we also hear French president Emmanuel Macron is a fan.
