A Drive-In Movie Theater Is Coming to the Grove

This summer, the mall’s garage is getting a retro makeover

Way back in the good ol’ days, drive-in movie theaters were a summertime tradition. The Gilmore Drive-In entertained Angelenos from 1948 until 1979, right on the corner of Third and Fairfax. This year, the Grove is reviving the spirit of the old Gilmore by turning the roof of the mall’s parking structure into a retro drive-in theater experience.

The Grove teamed up with the Petersen Automotive Museum, car dealership O’Gara Coach, and Citi to turn the garage’s open-air eighth floor (complete with surprisingly stunning views) into a rooftop cinema, with popcorn, snacks, retro photo ops and more.

Level 8 Drive-In screenings fall on the last Wednesday of the month and attendees will get to check out a real-life vintage car featured in the film.

June 26: Grease – Greased Lightning
July 31: The Great Gatsby – Red 1932 Duesenberg
August 28: Back to the Future – DeLorean
September 25: Iron Man – Tony Stark’s Ford Flathead Roadster

Attending the screenings is free, but advance reservations are encouraged as space is limited. Want to attend, but without the hassle of driving your own car to the drive-in? An Uber Lounge offers couches for rideshare users right at the front of the viewing area.
