It’s not the fantasy Finn-Poe Dameron pairing that’s inspired mountains of gay fan fic, but the producers of the animated series Star Wars Resistance revealed that two of the show’s characters are, in fact, a committed gay couple.

Reporting live from the show’s season two press day, the podcast Coffee with Kenobi got Athena Portillo, Justin Ridge, and Brandon Auman on the record confirming that characters Flix and Orka, voiced by Jim Rash and Bobby Moynihan, are “an item.”

“They’re absolutely a gay couple and we’re proud of that,” executive producer Ridge said of the two fictional, animated extraterrestrials, who apparently man something called the Office of Acquisitions in the Colossus. “We love Flix and Orka.”

Moynihan added, “I have had a sentence prepared for a year and a half. If someone would finally ask me, I would say, ‘All I can say is that when Flix says, ‘I love you,’ Orka says, ‘I know’…. They’re the cutest.”

Star Wars characters have inspired gay relationship speculation since the ’70s, when people decided C-3PO and R2-D2 were probably dating, despite being cyborgs. In 2015, Mark Hamill fielded questions about Luke Skywalker’s sexuality, telling the Sun, “…fans are writing and ask all these questions, ‘I’m bullied in school… I’m afraid to come out’. They say to me, ‘Could Luke be gay?’ I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer… If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”

More recently, Jonathan Kasdan, writer of Solo: A Star Wars Story, confirmed that Lando Calrissian (played by Donald Glover) is pansexual, which Glover joked probably makes the most sense in space.

The final season of Star Wars Resistance, which airs on the Disney Channel, is set to premiere on October 6.
