Itâs not the fantasy Finn-Poe Dameron pairing thatâs inspired mountains of gay fan fic, but the producers of the animated series Star Wars Resistance revealed that two of the showâs characters are, in fact, a committed gay couple.
Reporting live from the showâs season two press day, the podcast Coffee with Kenobi got Athena Portillo, Justin Ridge, and Brandon Auman on the record confirming that characters Flix and Orka, voiced by Jim Rash and Bobby Moynihan, are âan item.â
âTheyâre absolutely a gay couple and weâre proud of that,â executive producer Ridge said of the two fictional, animated extraterrestrials, who apparently man something called the Office of Acquisitions in the Colossus. âWe love Flix and Orka.â
Moynihan added, âI have had a sentence prepared for a year and a half. If someone would finally ask me, I would say, âAll I can say is that when Flix says, âI love you,â Orka says, âI knowââŠ. Theyâre the cutest.â
Star Wars characters have inspired gay relationship speculation since the â70s, when people decided C-3PO and R2-D2 were probably dating, despite being cyborgs. In 2015, Mark Hamill fielded questions about Luke Skywalkerâs sexuality, telling the Sun, ââŠfans are writing and ask all these questions, âIâm bullied in school⊠Iâm afraid to come outâ. They say to me, âCould Luke be gay?â Iâd say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer⊠If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.â
More recently, Jonathan Kasdan, writer of Solo: A Star Wars Story, confirmed that Lando Calrissian (played by Donald Glover) is pansexual, which Glover joked probably makes the most sense in space.
The final season of Star Wars Resistance, which airs on the Disney Channel, is set to premiere on October 6.
