”Don’t let them touch your face,” he sings with inimitable style

We must protect Randy Newman.

The iconic “I Love L.A.” singer-songwriter has written a new ditty, “Stay Away,” for our unusual times.

“Stay away from me, baby, keep your distance, please. Stay away from me, words of love in times like these,” he sings.

He also takes time to thank his quarantine partner and wife of 30 years, Gretchen Preece–his “Venus in sweatpants”–for putting up with him around the clock. “I’m gonna be with you 24 hours a day,” he sings. “A lot of people couldn’t stand that, but you can.”

The song is the result of a collaboration with another L.A. legend, KPCC’s Larry Mantle. The veteran AirTalk host and his team reached out to Newman to request that he record a PSA. The clip premiered on this morning’s episode.
