Is there a place for rough-and-tumble garage rock in today’s era of hyper-earnest indie folk? It’s complicated. Although the guitar slashing on L.A. band BRMC’s sixth album (Vagrant Records, $15) gets heads banging, you might feel passé doing it. But when the grungy trio ventures out of the garage and into a dreamier zone, it feels like a peek into the future, not an ode to the past.
